Lee Bell feels Crewe scorer Zac Williams’ freak injury ‘could have been avoided’

Crewe boss Lee Bell appeared to point the finger at Harrogate following a freak injury to matchwinner Zac Williams, who tripped over a frost sheet.

Williams’ 31st-minute header secured a 1-0 win for Alex but he limped out of the action at the end of the first half after falling over and twisting his ankle.

It was an incident that Bell thought could have been avoided, arguing that the sheets had been deliberately positioned to combat Mickey Demetriou’s long throw, which proved the source of Williams’ goal.

“They put the frost sheets down because of Mickey’s throw-in, which we ended up scoring the winner from anyway,” the Crewe chief claimed. “I spotted them when we went out and moved them because they were too close to the touchline and we said that …

Sean Longstaff wants Newcastle to go for FA Cup glory after beating Sunderland

Sean Longstaff has challenged Newcastle to mount a charge for FA Cup glory after launching their campaign with a morale-boosting derby victory over Sunderland.

The Magpies went into Saturday’s clash with their arch-rivals having lost seven of their previous eight games in all competitions and knowing the potential for a third-round exit at the hands of lower league opposition for a third successive season was a very real possibility if they were not at their best.

In the event, Eddie Howe’s men eased past the Black Cats with the minimum of fuss, securing a 3-0 victory which rekindled memories among the 6,000 travelling fans at the Stadium of Light of last season’s Carabao Cup final trip to Wembley and increased hope of an end to a 69-year wait for a major domestic …

LaLiga to take VAR plunge in 2018-19

LaLiga is set to use the much-discussed video assistant referee (VAR) system from next season.

VAR has been rolled out in the Bundesliga and Serie A this term, often sparking controversy, while its roll-out for selected games in England s FA Cup has also been far from seamless.

Recently retired referees Carlos Velasco Carballo and Carlos Clos Gomez will head up training for match officials, which begins immediately, while Mediapro will be responsible for providing the …

Harry Kane scored twice on his 100th England appearance to propel Lee Carsley s team to a 2-0 Nations League win over Finland.

And after seeing a diving header disallowed for offside in the first half, Kane ensured he marked his milestone appearance in style with a second-half double.

Having been denied by the excellent Lukas Hradecky, who made six saves in total to keep Finland in the contest amid England s domination, Kane finally broke the deadlock with a wonderful strike that cannoned in off the underside of the crossbar in the 57th minute.

Oblak inks new Atletico Madrid contract to 2023

Star goalkeeper Jan Oblak has extended his contract at Atletico Madrid through to June 2023.

The Slovenia international still had two years to run on his previous deal, but LaLiga side Atletico have moved to secure his future for the next four seasons.

The fresh agreement reportedly includes a release clause set at around €100million.

The 26-year-old has started all 32 of the club s league matches this term and his signature comes as another significant boost following Antoine Griezmann s commitment to a long-term deal during last year s World Cup.
